A New Era for Showcasing Trained Wild-Bred Mustangs and Burros
The Mustang Heritage Foundation (MHF) is proud to announce the re-branding of two of its most recognized events—the Mustang Heritage Spectacular and the Extreme Mustang Makeover—into a single, unified championship experience now known as the Wild Mustang & Burro Finals.
This evolution reflects a strategic shift in how the Foundation engages the equine community and advances its mission of promoting sustainable mustang and burro ownership.
Over the years, MHF has seen growing interest in wild-bred mustangs and burros beyond the gentling process. While not everyone wants to start a horse from the beginning, everyone can appreciate—and love—a well-trained one. The Wild Mustang & Burro Finals were created to meet this need by offering a more inclusive, open-show environment that celebrates accomplished mustangs and burros and the partnerships they form with their trainers and owners.
“Our goal is to build opportunity and community,” said Danielle Aamodt, from the Foundation. “By designing this as a premier finals event, we are also encouraging the development of local and regional competitions that can serve as qualifiers—giving trainers and owners clear goals to work toward while expanding access to participation nationwide.”
The rebrand also marks a renewed approach to the Extreme Mustang Makeover concept. While the Makeovers have long demonstrated what is possible in a short timeframe, the Foundation recognized the importance of emphasizing connection, horsemanship, and foundational training over speed alone. The Wild Mustang & Burro Finals highlight horses that have progressed beyond adoption and early training—showcasing their versatility, reliability, and long-term potential.
By focusing on finished, wild-bred mustangs and burros, the Finals create a pathway that extends beyond adoption. Skilled trainers prepare these horses for success, and dedicated owners carry that success forward into lifelong partnerships—proving that mustangs and burros can thrive in a wide range of disciplines and homes.
The Wild Mustang & Burro Finals represent the future of mustang and burro competition: inclusive, aspirational, and rooted in horsemanship that honors the horse.
